whey protein is a good option.  It really depends on how hard your work outs are because at the end of the day, the extra protein is there for muscle repair so if you aren't working out hard enough, the protein will just piss itself back out literally.

I use Whey powder before and after lifting, and Pure Protein bars and Fat Free Cottage Cheese if I feel I haven't had enough protein for the day. . I Stock up on the bars when they're $10 for 10. Fat free cottage cheese is a good cheap protein source as well.

Whey for post workout and casein before bed that way you have protein to digest throughout the night.

As always, whole foods are better. If you can afford a whey isolate it'll be better but ON Gold Standard is pretty good.

Dymatize Iso whey reall teastes great and is awesome, my dick even goes harder when I consume it! From other protein sources raw eggs if you know some farmers and fish (especially Wild salmon) are great.

your body needs vitamins/minerals and proper foods from the food pyramid. I would recommend whey protein as a meal substitute if for some reason you don't have time or money for more natural protein. whey protein also requires you drink more water. the problem I found with whey protein is when you stop taking it, your body feels like a train wreck. In general, the more natural the better but because of time/money/access you may want to "cut corners" with a supplement
