Title: Is it better to lift weights or stick strickly to cardio to lose weight.
Post by: RealTerrence on July 15, 2014, 01:42:31 PM
I've been working out lately because I want to lose weight and get toned up in time for the fall to try out for the basketball team. What's the quickest way to lose weight, cardio training or light weight lifting. Some people say both, but I've also heard sticking to one is better for beginners. Any opinions?

Light weight lifting & Cardio would be fine if you are only trying to maintain your current fitness level.

However, for loosing weight and developing serious muscles you should consider: High intensity interval training.
It can be done with or without weights, depends on your on preferences.

Try to find or buy one or two books of this guy "Ross Enamait", or visit his site, he really knows how to achieve much wit limited or no-equipment at all.

If you're looking to burn fat then weight lifting is the better of the two options as building muscle burns calories throughout the day.

If you can manage both though, do both. It's always a good idea to have multiple angles of attack on a problem.

a combination of both works the best.
Do your weight training + cardio acceleration in between sets
like in this program: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/jim-stoppani-six-week-shortcut-to-shred.html

and keep protein high, fat normal, and carbs low

Do both of them, it would get you to real shape. Sprints with 1:4 work/rest ratio are killer for loosing fat!

Is it better to lift weights or to do cardio?

What ever you can do consistently. That's the only thing that works.

Eating less calories is probably more important.  Eating one cupcake needs about 4 miles of walking to burn off! :)

You need to decide whether you want to bulk or cut first.

I've always found at least half an hour of cardio nearly every day on a sensible diet and drinking lots of water has been the best for me for losing fat, it all depends on what you want to achieve

I recommend packing on some serious muscle first. Get going with Starting Strength or some other beginner lifting program for a few months and then move on to an intermediate program like Texas Method. Once you've got a decent strength base it'll be much easier to lose weight on top. For example, just being alive I burn 2700 calories. To maintain weight while working out I need to eat a minimum of 3300 calories. If you've never counted calories before, 2700 is a hard number to hit unless you're eating absolute trash so the stronger you get, the easier it is to undereat and shed fat.

What about a mix of cardio for fat burning and weight training for muscle growth? Does this work?

Both and maybe more. If you stick to one you might get bored and do less workout. Spice things up and add new things on the menu.
