My brother-in-law has suffered for many years from ailments no doctor in this city or in the city of Toronto could diagnose.
He went to a few hospitals in the USA with no luck.
    They called him a hypercondriac.
    What do doctors know...?
    They were wrong.

    Alternative medicine was his cure.
He started taking acupuncture and he was fine for a while but unfortunatly his sickness grew.
A diet of seafood only helped but after a while he couldn't eat shell food.
The vegan diet worked for a while.

He is now taking herbal medicines and can eat meat again but only if it was not butchered more that two days ago.
He cannot eat anything with gluten of course.
My sister (his wife) thanks god for herbal medicines.

I thank god I can eat almost anything and not get sick.

For people with undiagnosable illnesses alternative medicine is their only cure.

A "Hoax" wouldn't be an accurate term; the results are just examples of the Placebo effect.  Many people are of the perception that if something is foreign to their culture it may have some mystical properties which are unknown to their society at large.  Whether we are talking about a stereotype ("Native Americans being close to the Earth"), a figure of "divine" wisdom (an Indian Guru), or an obscure ritual, (organizing your furniture in a particular pattern to access magical energies) embracing an "alternative" approach to serious medical problems can be as absurd as carrying a Lucky Rabbit's foot around to fight Cancer.  Medicine not based in scientific research should be carefully and objective scrutinized before being used.

What symptoms was he having? if you don't mind saying... But IMO alternative medicine can be very effective.

Well that's the strange thing because his symptoms varied from having stomach aches to head aches.
He also slowly lost his hair.
He loves wine and bought a small vineyard and loved to test the wines.
He would taste the wines but would always spit it out, he never swallowed the wine.
His son now tests the wines.

His latest alternative medicine doctor told him to drink distilled water only.
Tap and bottled water contain impurities.
He made his own still to make it.

    Anyways...
Alternative medicine has been his and the rest of the families godsend.
I'm glad he stopped complaining at the dinner table when the family got together for a family meal

    On a side note...
I heard of a phenomena called the placebo effect...
    Quote
' A placebo (Latin for "I shall please") is a pharmacologically inert substance (such as saline solution or a starch tablet) that produces an effect similar to what would be expected of a pharmacologically active substance (such as an antibiotic). '
[Link to external site removed by Tazzy]

Of course a phenomena is a very rare occurrence and the placebo effect does not apply to my brother in laws case.

    Thanks for asking zuperman.

If acupuncture continues being subjected to medical trials, is demonstrated to correlate to certain conditions improving, and becomes better understood, then can we still "alternative" medicine? Choice stimulation of certain nerve bundles may yet have something to it.

Hell if I know what, though. Also, note that this doesn't automatically give all of alternative medicine, or even subsets like traditional Chinese medicine, a free pass.

I find something as fundamentally flawed as homeopathy a bit easier to dismiss.  This excerpt from The Enemies of Reason explains: http://yout ube.com/watch?v=8KbLHii8M2A

The idea that more diluted solutions are more potent, and that water has a type of memory facilitating that potency implies that everyone on earth is nigh constantly being given extremely powerful doses of every homeopathic remedy out there. If that were true, there'd be no point taking the pills.

Well it works for some... the mind is very powerful... If you are closed minded, of course you would not consider it... but don't dismiss the fact it worked for RA3001 brother, and countless others. If it did not work, why do many benefit from it?   respect  Cheesy

You made a very good point zuperman.   karma_1
The mind of man (and others) is indeed very powerful.
The metaphyical aspects of life are a wonder.
    "What is life..."
Man also has an imagination by the grace of God (a metaphysical being).
Sometimes that imagination gets out of hand.

If a "sickness" can be cured with a placebo (a sugar or salt pill) or a pin stuck into the human body or a religious "Healer" saying "You are cured!!!" or....

God has also given some of us the ability to reason.

    Thanks for the info mate...karma_1
P.T. Barnum made a hell of a lot of money from suckers.
    Quote
Phineas Taylor Barnum (July 5, 1810 – April 7, 1891) was an American showman, businessman, and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

His successes may have made him the first "show business" millionaire.[citation needed] Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for sometime a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me,"[1] and his personal aims were "to put money in his own coffers."[citation needed] Barnum is widely but erroneously credited with coining the phrase "There's a sucker born every minute."

TV docters maybe his next and only hope for a cure.

I fear he may be a hypochondriac.
Some people have told me that there is no cure for that disease.
While it is not infectious, per say, it does have a tendency to bring down the morality of almost everyone that associates with hypochondriacs.

Hypochondriacs have no diseases modern man can diagnose.
Instead of spending so much money on a cure for cancer and Aids governments should spend it on looking for a cure for hypochondriacs.
Hypochondriacs are the silent majority that suffer in silence while governments spend all their medical research dollars looking for a cure for cancer and Aids.

Hypochondriacs should unite and be heard like the greenies treehuggers gays lesbians and others.
    Shout out your problems.
If no one listens take it to the next step.
    Violence!!!

As comedian/poet Tim Minchin said (search Youtube for "Storm Tim Minchin"), by definition alternative medicine has either not been proved to work or been proved not to work.

Do you know what they call alternative medicine that's been proved to work? Medicine.
