I'm having trouble converting rar files with my mac.  I got stuffitexpander, the latest version.  When I try to open a rar file, it doesn't open it 75% of the time. certain rar's  open fine.  when a file doesn't open, it gives me a message "error 17540".  Then it asks me if I want to download the new version (which it did the first time immediately after I downloaded it.  I did so several times, but thre aren't that many new versions!). 

it opens zip files pretty reliably. 

can anyone help? you can pm me if you want.

Some older files will only open with the first version of stuffit 7.0.3

Hi,
   I have a similar problem, have you tried on the files that give you the error message, opening stuffit expander programme and dragging and dropping the rar file right into the box? It always works for me!!! Let me know!!

I dont use stuffit expander for rar archives.
I have always used unrarX, a freeware rar expander, and have not had any issues with it...

Only downside is that it will only open rar files, it wont create them

Just use UnRarX and you will be fine... ;-)

To create an archive just right click on the file and choose "create archive"...it´s as easy as that! ;-)

I copy them to PC and unrar the ones that don't work on Mac.
