Ironically, as we discussed last night about how bad things are for the African football in this tournament and the chance that not a single African nation will make it to the next around for the first time since 1982 . it appears to be quite different for the South American continent

Actually, it feels good to be a Latin American footballer or fan in the past week. Everything is going as planned and it looks quite peachy for most if not all the 5 South American teams. 2 already qualified with acceptable performances (Argentina&Brazil) 3 others almost guarantee a qualification unless something really weird happens (Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile) while a 6th country that is considered be a semi-Latin American nation will only need a draw to qualify and that is of course Mexico.
Meanwhile, the ship of African football is sinking rapidly in this tournament and one of their last good hopes (Ivory Coast) just been crushed by Brazil a short while ago after a very mediocre performance by the Ivorians. Things look dark in the dark continent and the trend continued today with poor performance with every game that involves an African side. I am not bragging, but it was somehow expected by me since most of the players in west African countries teams are good individually by the have no sense of team play or proper defensive tactics. They just attack blindly and couldn't care less about their defensive lines and that had been always the plaque of West African.  football throughout the years. Most of the qualifying team Players who participated in the Angola 2010 African Nations cup maintained the same story that they don't care about the African nation cup as they are just here to prepare for the World cup. I always found that hilarious since they are and never could real contenders in the international scene without being a contender and a champion on your own turf.

However, to be honest I didn't think that they will look that bad despite what I mentioned earlier. But unfortunately they are and that makes me quite saddened but nevertheless it might be for the good since they might consider changing the qualification system one day for the good teams to actually represent Africa. No on to the games of today that ranged from Average to Good :

    Paraguay - Slovakia 2-0

An interesting though almost one side game from the part of the Paraguayans who dominated the game almost entirely with slick and accurate passing skills, good lobs and timed short passes. The Paraguayan team looks to be more and more as the contender of the black horse of the tournament though that is early to say. But they have a great attacking line filled with the likes of Lucas Barrios, Nelson Valdez and Cardozo and funny enough and despite the great attacking line none of them scored but it's actually the Vera the mid-fielder who cut through the Slovakian team like a samurai sword and receiving a brilliant pass by Barrios and shooting it brilliantly in the Slovakian net at the 27th minute. The Slovakians who formerly did great games during the qualifications performed so modestly trying to outcome the continuous domination and attacks of the Paraguayans but in vain. Neither speed or skills could come even close that of the Paraguayans who continued their attacking game play all around and losing chance after another especially by Santa Cruz who missed what could have been one of the best goals in the tournament. The same went on on the second half with a completely surrendered Slovakian side in front of a deluge of attacks by Paraguayans who finally were rewarded for their good efforts by another goal from Riveros only 4 minutes before the final whistle. Now Paraguay just have one foot in the next round and the most favourites to be the group leader especially after the Italian disappointing game that follows.

    Italy- New Zealand 1-1

Apparently the Italians seem to enjoy torturing their fans till the last minute of every tournament. It's a trend they have set for decades and seem to be resilient on keeping it. They had a good chance today being the Title holder to at least have an easy win against an inexperienced and mostly anonymous group of players  who managed to keep Italy at bay with their strong yet very predictable defensive game play . What was worse is that Kiwis manged to score first from an obvious offside goal at the 7th minute . The goal is still a blunder from former World cup player of the tournament defender Cannavaro . But an offside is an off-side, yet the lacking of proper positioning from the Linesman let this one slip behind the back of Referee. The Italians tried to dominate the game by trying to control the ball as much possible but to their unfortunate haughty selves , they did everything wrong in trying to penetrate the New Zealanders defense by lobbing the ball in the 18th yard area that gave them nothing but easy headings from the Kiwis defenders who found the Italians not as near as deadly as they thought to be.
Yet at the 28th minute one mistake from the New Zealand's Smith who managed to pull Di Rossi's shirt has lead to the heaven sent penalty that Iaquinta managed to equalize the score with. Leaving an entire hour for the modest Italian team to come back in the game and try to win this one to put a foot in the next round. Yet the same style of long passing and lobs continued and that made the Kiwi defenders life easier as they thwarted the Italian passes and Lobs one after another.

In the second half Italy tried to change the game pace by playing a more straight forward short Latin style passing but still not accurate enough and the missing passes were numerous that for anyone who just watched the game would have thought that the ones who were wearing white are the actual Italians and not the very modest New Zealanders. All the replacements made by Macello Lippi were not enough to penetrate the blockade of the Kiwis and for once the Italians seems to taste their own medicine of Iron curtain style defending . Now Italy paid for Lippi's arrogance of not summoning quality players like Del Pierro and Luca Toni despite the decrease in performance of the latter but they are truly veteran players. Italy today lacked a leader in the middle field and neither Zambrotta or Cameronese were able to perform that role. Italy needed a player with the spirit and skills of Del Pierro who is the only skilled Italian player still on the fields yet. Now they are in a dilemma since they will face the Slovakians who still have some hopes to be the second on the group and will likely to fight to the bones in the third decisive games. I can say congratulations for the Kiwis for not losing their cool most of the game and despite that their football is something I never like to see but yet again another inexperienced side managed to stop the flow of a football superpower. It will be a shame if Italy leaves the tournament this soon but they deserved it since they still hold to that old believe they can always do pass to the second round after the third game and unfortunately that doesn't always happen.

    Brazil - Ivory Coast 3-1

Now we have the game of the day which was very promising due to the great players that both teams have in their squads. Indeed it lived up to our expectations as some beautiful football was shown today .Yet it was plagued by unfortunate refereeing mistakes which seems to increase day by day as well as unexpected violence from both teams particularly the Ivorians. Being a fan of both teams , I was expecting a more cool minded actions from a players of these caliber yet, everyone seem to have lost it today and indulged in some unethical and unsportsmanlike behaviour and couldn't keep their nerves despite that there was nothing really that worth it. Apparently the Ivorians who always play with a lot of pride and end up losing early or late in the tournament . A trend they have been doing at least in the past 3 African Championship . They can have some of the most talented players in African football but they still loose. Why? because they have no discipline on the field and they tend to think too much of themselves once they feel that they are doing ok and this is their downfall . ALWAYS AND EVER. Nothing really changed about the mentality of that Ivorian team for the past 6 years , it's like broken record.

On the other hand, Brazilians today displayed why they are one of the favourite teams and exploited the stupidity of Sven Erickson open game tactic in their favour and managed to almost entirely control the game after the 15th minute when the Ivorians started to realize that they are facing a tough opponent. In my opinion almost 30% of the Brazilian's power lies in Elano . Some will be surprised by that but those who focus on their games know that once Elano is out of the pitch , the sheen of Brazil fades away especially that his replacement Daniel Alves is not the right person for the job especially with Maicon on the field. This always seem to be the silly mistake that Dunga keeps doing for ages. Unfortunately for all of us and Brazil fans Elano was out on an injury and we are praying that it's nothing serious since Brazil relies more than they want to admit on the skills and accuracy of that guy. Under the continuous pressure that Brazil exercised on the Ivorians the first goal was scored by Luis Fabiano after a great run in between a very docile Ivorian defense and the ball found the net at the 25th minute. The Brazilians continued their dominance throughout the the first half and extended to the second half with few interuption and shots by the Ivorians which was easily handled by the Brazilian defense.

Then at the 51st minute comes the  highlight of the tournament so far , a brilliant three time dribble and lobs through the Ivorian defense by the Brilliant Fabiano that ended with a wonderful shot on the left side on the Ivorian goalie scoring on the best every goals to be scored in a world cup. YET that is not exactly true because Fabiano blatantly used his hands twice to control the lobbing ball and much to the suprise of everyone the goal was registered as OK and play went on. A very controversial decision by the strange referee who in another shot appeared to be telling Fabiano that he scored the goal with his hands. I believe this referee will be punished if there some justice in this world. Yet despite that it's still a brilliant goal . You will never understand what I mean till you actually see it in reply so I advise you my friends to do it. If you believe that Thierry Henry goal was disgraceful for using his hands to pass the ball , it's child's play compared to this one. But that goal couldn't have stopped the brilliant Brazilians from moving forward to score a third one at the 62nd minute by the wonderful Elano who translated the brilliant pass by Kaka into a superb goal . After a short while Elano got injured due to a hard collision from the Ivorians who started to look like an Amateur African teams and playing very savage style football that I believe is beneath them since they are really better than that. Leave that stuff for the talentless Algerians guys. You are way better than that. Unfortunately the last 15 minutes were the worst of the game after Elano's exist and Alves not fulfilling his substitute role. With a little pressure and a complete absence of Brazilian defense marking Drogba managed to score and excellent goal at 79th minuteafter receiving a nice lob pass that he headed into the net of Julio Cesar.

The unfortunate frictions and collisions continued to dominate the rest of the game especially from Kaita and his mates which lead that the Brazilian hero Kaka lost his nerve for the first time and did a silly amateurish mistake that led to his second yellow card and send off on the 86th minute but the game score was sealed even after the Ivorians scored their only conciliation goal. Great team play by Brazil tonight despite the very controversial yet very brilliant goal from Fabiano and the unfortunate events during the last 10 minutes. The chances for Ivory Coast are not impossible by really slimming in case Portugal wins a comfortable one tomorrow against North Korea.

Tomorrow's games should be interesting as Spain has the chance to redeem their surprising defeat against Switzerland while Switzerland has the chance to declare themselves as an early qualifier to the next round. Also the Portuguese have the chance to get to the second place if they win the tough North Koreans. Looking forward to receive your comments guys and see you tomorrow. Have fun with the games.  Wink

It ain't real pleasent to be fan of European soccer atm ...

Can't add anything to the first game: Brilliant summarised

    Italy- New Zealand
To NZ offside goal. It was offside, but really hard to tell, the pundits and analysts needed many replays from different angles to say so. BUT, Reid pushed an Italian defender in the same scene, what could have been seen.
The penalty was quite clear, though, again, de Rossi fell like he was shot.

The first 30 min were nice to watch, rest was rather boring, though I have to admit, that I expected way less from the all whites.
But someone needs to tell them, that this game is named is football cause it's played with the feet, not with the elbows. Fallon should be sent in the first half, for giving the same elbow check to an Italian as he it did 5 min before, where he was awarded with yellow. And I've seen that from several NZs.Though the Italians are known for acting, I know it hurts like hell and that's just not the way we play.
But again, they showed good spirit to the end and were rewarded for it. Go on like that and show us the Haka Wink
Sad thing: When Italy and NZ have equal points and equal goal difference, than the decission is made by a coin flip, what's not alright, imho.

    Brazil - Ivory Coast
The game we were all lookin for the most, I guess. When I read your description of Fabiano's goal, my chin was droppin by each word. Till the 'yet'. It really looked brill from distance, but it was plain cheating in close up. Can't tell why the ref didn't see at least one of the two hand plays. He also asked Fabiano after that scene if it was, but Fabiano refused like he was asked, if he drinks American beer. That lying, might get punished afterwards. Not today, where he was awarded with the man of the match title Sad

Kaka made a great game, till his stupid revenge foul, what should have lead to a red card, though it was a pure act of violence. The Ivorian "victim" again, was hitted on the chest and hold his face ... s@cks!
Hope Elano recovers and can continue and agree with you that the amount of brutal fouls and the inability of the ref to deal with it, ruined the game.

I really don't know what to think about the Brazilian coach. On the one side he made a disciplined and highly effective team out of the Selecao. On the otherside they lost their celebrating, the fast actions and almost everything I loved the Brazilian soccer for. They looked slow and blunt, despite some solo runs. Effective and successful yes, nice to watch nay

Though Lucio is a great defender, they seem rather vulnerable in their own half ...

Outlook: Dunga will spare players, but Brazil will go for 1st place for prestige, not for being afraid of anyone from group H. And the Ivories should be able to score a high win gainst North Korea. Than both can continue  and everyone is happy.

    Great summaries again.
( I feel I need to add one thing in general: I only comment things, where I disagree or wanna state my point or add anything and don't say when I agree, what I do almost all the time)

Am in a bit of shock here reading this...I watched the game on the BBC and from every angle you care to watch the SO CALLED FOAL no the Ivorian player runs towards Kaka who sees him coming out of the corner of his eye , as he approaches Kaka lifts his bent arm up close to his body and the Ivorian runs into him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All Kaka did was stand still
The Ref on video playback was shown to be looking in the opposite direction only to turn and see the Idiot rolling on the floor clutching his face.

You will find that Fifa will issue a ban to the Ivorian for that as they did against Rivaldo for the same thing by the corner flag(remember)

The chaps at the BBC Lineker Shearer Motty who I respect all said it was the worst red card for many a year and Fifa will punish the Ivorian

To the game itself Did you all not see the Ref again!! go up to Fabiano and ask him if he used his arm!!!!!!! Fabiano said no  :lmao:was so funny to watch chaps at bbc played that back a few times was a bad case of double hand ball cheating.

All in all Brazil deserved to win with some great football and for me looked in second gear If Drogba did not have a broken arm things may have been different.

Paraguay look very good indeed and the Italians are on borrowed time I hope

Respect to all who post here respect

Hello my good friends Big Balls and puiforcat. It's always a pleasure to read your comments guys.
I agree with Big Balls that Di Rossi overacted about the penatly though I believe it's a clear penalty since the New Zealander Defender was pulling his shirt but Di Rossi out smarted him by falling down and it was a right penalty. The law is the law you can't pull I a guy shirt in any circumstances.
The New Zealander goal was an off-side to me and though it was hard for most linesmen to spot it since it was too fast and chaotic , that doesn't change the fact that it's clearly appears to be an offside. But since the self proclaimed King of the game Seb Blatter said he will never utilize the cameras as evidence, we will keep seeing these unfortunate cases for as long as we live or when someone more sensible replacing Blatter. (Say Amen)
The same thing could have been said about Fabiano's goal though it was brilliant but still a hand-ball and a clear yellow card should have been given to Fabiano by the French referee who was the main reason why things started to look nasty by the end of the game and was responsible for the Ivorians to lose their wit, though I still blame them for the irresponsible violence they resorted to at the end of the game..
When you play against teams like Brazil , it's bad enough to worry about a team with that sort talent facing you , then add to that hand ball goals !!!, that is too much for any team to take.

As for Brazil beautiful football that seems to be almost over. Well Brazil have tried since 1974 all the way 1990 to win the cup and hardly even managed to be in the semi finals . They were all been beaten by the more organized defensive game-play exercised by the Italians, the Germans and the Argentinians. The wake up call came in the second round game in 1990 against Argentina lead by Maradonna himself and Brazil were led by Careca . The Brazilians displayed amazing football like no one else and controlled the game 85% of it . But at the last minute the Legendary Maradonna dribbled across the frustrated Brazilian team and passed one the slickest balls ever to the great Cannigia who slipped in the Brazil net and much to the world Shock they were. That day my friend marked the death of the Brazilians beautiful football. (R.I.P)  Grin
Accordingly they had to change their ways and they successfully did in 1994 winning the cup reached the final in 1998 as well winning 2002 and here they are again trying to do a sort of beautiful football but it will never be the same like it was during the era of the Legendary Pele. Back then there were no Franz Beckenbauer or serious defensive systems like Catenaccio. Wink

Puiforcat. I believe you were disappointed by my analysis of the Kaka send off but I assure you that Kaka is one my most beloved football players for his talent, Character and ethics. He should not have let himself slip and be dragged into this hassle in the first place. I have said clearly that it's Kaita's fault for the aggression he was excercising in the 2nd half of the game and unfortunately he was not penalized for it. But that doesn't take the hook off Kaka since he was already booked once just minutes earlier and then sent off minutes afterward . He used his own elbow to protect himself but he was silly enough to move it towards the chest of Kaita and Kaita the drama queen of the night side by side to Maicon , staged that it was an aggression from Kaka. I belive he should have been smarter and move away. If that reminds us of anything , it reminded us of how stupid Zidane was against the Italians in the last World Cup's final and how was he directly responsible for the loss of France to the world cup.
If it was a different game in the Semi- finals or the final , the Brazilian team would have been in a really tough situation with the presence of Kaka or any key player for all I care. That mistake is a good lesson for Kaka. Ironically just 15 minutes earlier I was telling my brother who was watching this with me. How Great Kaka as a player and as decent and honourable guy. He reminded of princes and medieval honourable knights. 10 minutes later my brother was laughing at me. It was embarrasing:)Smiley. Yet I still retain my opinion about Kaka since he is above that and should have learned a lesson by now.

Thank you again guys for your great feedback.

    Italy 1 - 1 New Zealand

What can I say?  What on earth Lippi was doing leaving Luca Toni, Del Piero and Cassano out of the 23 is beyond me.  Although Del Piero is getting on a bit, he would have had a field day against the Kiwis with his skill.  Cassano may be a bit of an idiot at times, but he's playing well for Sampdoria and was worth a shot.  Luca Toni may not have had the best season, but he's still better at international level than some of players in the Italian squad.

Congratulations to the Kiwis - not the most attractive football, but excellent defending from them.  The Italians looked as though they hadn't got any idea how to break down the Kiwis - and when they did, Mark Paston (ex Walsall player - the team I support, BTW!) was there to make a save, or to punch the ball clear.  With regards to Rory Fallon and the "elbowing", I would agree that he probably deserved to be booked for the first elbow.  However, after the booking, he didn't lead with his elbow at all, and the Italian players started to roll around like David Haye had punched them.  It was a deliberate attempt to get Fallon sent off and was disgraceful.  The Kiwis goal was offside, but if the officials are not in the correct position, then they will give the benefit of the doubt to the attacker.  The penalty was one of those that I've seen given and also refused.  I think the one thing to bear in mind is consistency - look at the USA - Slovenia game.  When the USA's goal was disallowed, they should have had a penalty due to one of the Slovenian players wrestling an American player to the ground.  Consistent refereeing - that's what everyone wants!

    Brazil 3 - 1 Ivory Coast

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there seems to be something missing from this Brazilian side.  Yes, they're going to qualify comfortably, but that spark (or something) is missing from them.  I missed the sending off last night, but I've just watched on the BBC website.  I must disagree with your interpretation of it - completely disgraceful play acting from Keita.  Kaka didn't really do anything wrong - it was purely down to Keita's award-winning performance that Kaka was sent off.  i agree with Puiforcat - a ban should be forthcoming from FIFA for his playacting. It really does have echoes of Rivaldo and his Oscar-winning performance!

What struck me was how dirty Ivory Coast were - not something you associate with a Sven-Goran Eriksson team.  They may not be the best  Cheesy but they certainly are not dirty.

Elano's injury is not believed to be as serious as was first thought and he could be back to face Portugal.  Good news for the Brazilians, I think.

    Paraguay 2 - 0 Slovakia

I didn't see too much of this game, just some brief highlights.  From what I saw of it, your summary was spot on (as usual.  Grin)

To Kaka, well, there was no further replay or discussion on TV yesterday, so I watched some replays today and well. Bit tougher than I thought. From the angle and slowed speed I saw it during the game, it really looked like Kaka recognized Kaita running two him, checked on ref's position, felt unseen, pointed his elbow to Kaita's chest and even moved slightly his body towards him - clear red one.

But some vids I saw in ingame speed and from another angle it really looked like Kaka only placed his arm between himself and Kaita as a protection and Kaita ran into him.

Real tough call, but anyways Kaita should be punished for his playacting.

Congrats for your own subboard fetishist Wink

Thank you my good friends for this wonderful reception and I truly I am blessed to have great friends and supports like you guys. I appreciate your fine efforts Yakup and infinite support . You are always fantastic Yakup. Also Sigursaell my Icelandic good friend, your very kind words are inspiring and I hope to continue to live up to your expectations . Finally , my good friend Big Balls thank you for your congratulations and I dare say that I still believe that Kaita acted but Kaka misbehaved and lost control of his actions for a few minutes there. Like you clearly described it , he sensed that Kaita was nearby and he pointed his elbow towards the chest of Kaita intentionally trying to drive him away but Kaita acted as if he was hit in the face. :)Have a great day guys. Spain's game will be coming up shortly guys. Let's hope it's a good one. Thanks guys so much:)Smiley

Actually Festishist2004. Would you consider have a weekly review of important games. During international competitions the choices would be easy but 1 or more selected games from any or all of the The English Premiership / League, Bundesliga, Serie A, Primera, Eurodivisie etc would be great. I suspect that coverage of the English domestic competition would have a consistent audience because I can get to see English fixtures all over the world, it doesn't matter where I visit.

Yoiu have obviously drawn on a strong vein of interest so consider it please buddy. Like puiforcat after this competition is over it would be a shame to lose this board for the next 4 years.

PS puiforcat, gonna take this up with you in the Shoutbox. Seeing as you ad the onwer of Harrods as your club Chairman at Craven Cottage why were the pies so bad?!

Actually I had the opportunity of on of the corner boxes but I bought tickets for the Pavillion.
I was expecting pimms and lemonade but I had to buy pies as I was at a football match.

    The Pavillion was very nice.

I agree  I'd contribute, but I'm not sure people would want to read a report on the Walsall game every week.  Mind you, it would make a change from hearing about the (overrated, over-hyped) Premier league!

I do get to see some of the Bundesliga, Eredivisie and the occasional Russian league game (thank you ESPN).

I'm sure that the summaries would be great, and I'd also try to contribute, but I guess we won't have the lively discussions we have now.
I have to admit, that I mainly care for the Bundesliga (2nd and 3rd division also) and not really for the other leagues. Unless to the end, to see who will parttake in CL/EL. And even in the Bundesliga I could only talk about 2 or 3 games on each day, cause I personally don't want to judge about something, where I only saw the highlights.

It works great now, where we all watch the same games. Maybe the others are more open minded, but I'll focus on Germany when season starts again, sry.

Dear Folks , I thank you so much for this great feedback and your requests to continue this thread after the World Cup is over , It's too early for me to say what I am going to do next though I would hate to see this section locked as well. Of course contributions from all the great guys would be factor for the continuity of this thread in the future. Of course I can try to do summaries on weekly or each fortnight but I cannot say that for sure now . Since I am now in a vacation from my business since I didn't have any for the past 3 years but I will be back probably by the time this cup ends. However my connection to everyone here will persist and I am so proud and honoured to have met great friends like you guys. Mainly the problem with covering International Leagues is that the games mostly play at the same time and that would make physically impossible to review them all but maybe the important one. I am big fan of the Bundesliga myself and watched most the main games of the last season being a Big fan of Bayern München. I also watch the main and important games in the English Premier league and the Scottish one. Recently I don't have access to neither the Italian Calicio or the Spanish Liga so that won't be workable. Of course the upcoming big event in the world football will be Copa America hosted in Argentina 2011 and followed by the Euro 2012. Hopefully we will be all fine by then and we can do the same like we are doing now with this cup.
Of course I can rely on my good friends. Shodan , Big Balls, Puiforcat and Sigursaell to do some reviews for the games they choose and thus keeping this thread alive for more analysis coming up. We shall definitely assign roles should the need come to depending on each other schedule.

Of course I can also report the Egyptian League but none of you will care about that, though I assure that a lot of games in this league are far better than some of the stuff in this tournament like England - Algeria or Uruguay - France for example. LOLOL
Anyway guys, I feel great being here as I was under a lot of stress lately and really writing and sharing my football thoughts actually elevate that from my mind. Thanks a lot guys and have a great day . We shall further discuss the future of this thread by the end of the world cup.

I think that fetishist2004 has done a amazing job and I am very much enjoying the banter with all the members who post.

I think that the board should continue but not just waiting for fetishist2004 to post and then us reply I think it would be better that anyone who sees a great game posts his or her diary of the game and others then can comment

I for one would be happy to write my thoughts on games that I go to and of course watch on TV for instance I will be at Fulhams first home game which so happens to be against MAN U yikkkeeesss!!!!

So to sum up Board changes to "Football Diaries" and we post as explained above that is my thoughts and I hope others will join in and keep this board going

Respect and best wished to all

No Shodan he left Zamalek last year as he failed to prove himself there . He scored one or two goals maximum and then got into trouble with the coach as he kept asking for holidays. He seemed to be in Egypt for a vacation and not actually as a Pro player despite Zamalek paying a heft sum of money for him and he did nothing. Same Goes for Zaki and Mido who did actually nothing when they played the first half of the Season and the team ended up in the 13th place for the first time in it's history. It's an internal problem in Zamalek through their history as they really spoil their stars unlike Ahly their archrivals and my favourite team. However Zamalek managed to go forward to 2nd place after Ahly when he got rid of both Zaki to Hull City and Mido to West Ham . Ironic isn't it?

Thanks puiforcat , Well I will do my best to give summaries about the Egyptian league then and I will provide historical information about it so guys around here would know why the rivalries occured and why one team hates the other and so on. As well historical achievements of the big teams. We can do this after the WC is finished. Have fun guys.
