Saw a 99 Passat, 75k miles; Carfax checks out, original owner, regular oil change...the guy says blue book value is 6K, which even he thinks is high.  I think it should be way lower, closer to 4k.  Whadya think??

Yeah a 99 Passat is an old car, even if only 75k miles (I have a ford mondeo 09 and already 60k miles on it !) But, which engine ?

what about insurance costs ?

Parts for that car are generally pricey. At that mileage the upkeep costs would be my concern.

Stay away from those, I know people who have blown over 3 engines.  If it's a diesel, that's okay.

Well, now that I saw this part of forum, I should be sharing my knowledge...
They are pretty solid cars, and if that's a diesel -engined, it is great find for that mileage.
Others have warned about the gasoline -version, but it's not that bad, great and best of all, comfortable to ride as you know if you have test drived one.

For the right price, I would say go for it. There's much worse cars out there...

I have an 04 Passat the 1.8 turbo and it's a great car. Fixing can cost $ so it's best if you can do things yourself.  Simple ECU chip tuneup can get almost double the torque!! I now have 206hp / 245lb-ft.  It's an awesome car!

Best Passat is 2000-2004 1,9l TDI. Is the old PD engine. Consume 5l diesel/100km. Have seen some over 400000 km.
