lol i have spent the last week installing Linux "MEPIS" because Windows 7 decided it was not going to let me use it anymore unless i paid it a ridiculous amount of money!

So....i was forced into finally venturing into the geek-verse and use Linux, and to my supprise i actually like it! Lol..... It is complicated compared to windows, i dont know what i am doing most of the time. With windows you just click on a exe and the app installs but with Linux you have to select all the files individually and install them yourself, sounds like hell dosent it, but actually if you have forgotten a file the app tells you, and this is the best bit ever....EVEN with all my fumbling around it has not crashed even once!!!!!!! Thousands of apps are available to dl directly and no restarts either.True it is still too complicated but in a couple of years i reckon there will be versions for mere mortals who just want a pc to work without paying hundreds for a OS that is no where near as stable!

Lol sorry if i sound like a super geek, but believe me, i have the brain power of a gold fish so i am not in any way shape or form, and i have been using windows since ver3.1 , i only wished i had seriously tried Linux a lot,lot earlier thats all!!!!

javascript:void(0); to all those Linux users and the GNU community!

linux is nice to use sometimes, there are many different kinds of linux never tried MEPIS. look around for all the linux distros there are ALOT, the most common is ubuntu. take a look here for some of the more common ones maybe give them a go Smiley http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

a refreshing change from windows but,.. you can still use windows 7 even if you dont pay for it.

step 1.
install windows 7 get a disc or dload from microsoft

step 2. ignore inputting activation code Wink

Step 3. in your 30 day free trial completly update windows

Step 4. once the trial runs out your descktop background will turn black and in the corner you will get a not genuine thing
also you wont be able to use microsoft securty essentials. apart from this windows will work fine all your programs will still work
i used non activated windows 7 for a year before i could be botherd to buy it.

Smiley Cool thanks for the info Scilya, Karma too you for the help. Smiley

Lol i guess i was in a bit of a "i hate you M$" moment, it must happen at least once a week, when i wrote the above post, lol.

The distro site doent seem to be working at the moment unfortunatly, but i had heard of it while i was searching for the MEPIS site so its somewhere i will keep trying, thanks for the link i didnt have the exact address. MEPIS i discovered is a Debian version of Linux, lol i never knew there were so many varieties until this week! I only chose MEPIS because i had a "Live" version off of the cover of a magazine that i had lying around when windows was causing trouble. So i thought i would install that version just in case i needed help i would have the mag for a guide. But i was so supprised , it only took 20mins to install, and worked perfectly first time, my past expriances with Linux were NEVER successful, hence my supprise this time round, and there is so much "free" for it too already in the "program manager" or "Synaptic", and i havent experienced the blue screen of death once either even though i have installed God knows what lol!

As for Windows i did not know about that method, thank you, instead i found a OEM version this time round and applied the Windows Loader v2.1 SLIC patch, and now everythings working ok again. I am guessing my previous "retail" version and patch details had been blacklisted, or it was not a complete but a pre-release time limited version i dont know.

Smiley Thank you Scilya Smiley

I find it hard to understand why you can hate someone/company for not letting you use their software FREE.  Just because others have paid for it, doesn't mean you should get a free ride.

in terms of stability windows 7 is much better then the previous versions, i used linux for a while (ubuntu) but decided that the WINE emulator was not compatible with most programs that i wished to run.

to each their own i guess

I'm still using good old xp which is more convenient for me than win7. But I use linux at work and it is very flexible I have to admit, tons of things you can do easily in comparision to windows.

Ubuntu is great. Stable, powerful, and has most of the things you'd need. Though as a more 'user-friendly' build of Linux, I found it rather... not user friendly. Also there's the workability with laptops - not as great as you'd expect sometimes Sad

Have a look at the Distrowatch site. Details of over 600 odd distros in the archives so to speak.

"Ubuntu" used to be the flavour of the month but the last few versions use a not terribly intuitive desktop ( I appreciate this will be new to yourself and countless others but you will pick up the basics very quickly).

It looks as if the trend is towards "Mint", with either the Mate or Cinnamon desktop.

Of course that's not to say another distro de jour will not appear. "Mageia" seems to have come from nowhere (and could just as easily return there).

The really, really great thing about Linux stuff is the complete lack of worry from nasty malware stuff, and it seems to attract no virus threats at all.

However, commercial progs don't always run too well in Wine...something to do with latency I gather but you would need to google for far more detailed info, if arsed of course. That said it is entirely possible to either dual boot a Linux distro with your W7, say, (both Operating Systems live on the same hard drive and can access/share, as in read and write to, the files on said hard drive).

You can run Linux in an MS OS or vice versa. You can run a "live" distro via your CD/DVD drive or you can even run a distro off a usb drive...and still save to the hard drive. You cannot update software very easily if using an optical disk or usb drive unless you d/l a later/latest version and burn a new disc.

If you want to dual boot or run "live" from a DVD or CD or usb drive, and without going into humungous detail, basically you have to gain access to the set up stuff in the BIOS (press f?) before you see the W7, say, boot splash page and alter the boot sequence. Easy to do and as easy to reset.

Whether "you" get on with Linux is entirely for "you" to decide. I went over to Linux in 2007 and have never gone back, except to run some progs in W7 which ran live audio/video stuff and the latency might have been an issue.

The latency thing with Wine might be an issue for other users too and generally commercial sw houses don't do Linux versions of their stuff.

One comment which might deter would be users is that a lot, actually most, of Linux distros are hobby/self indulgence/vanity projects and you can never be sure a distro will be supported for ever and a day. The good news is that the "big boys" such as Ubuntu, Mint, Suse, Fedora have been around for years and presumably have a strong financial background.

So if anyone wants to try Linux I would strongly urge you to read up first, decide if it can meet your needs, as in running particular software, then try a distro on a "back-up" machine. Saves a lot of work backing up files, not to mention avoiding a potential disaster.

If however you simply want to surf and not be concerned with viruses then Linux may very well be for you. One really good thing about Linux distros is that they come with many, many, many device drivers already installed so that you can plug stuff in and it just works.

I experimented with one of those 3G dongle things and found that the distro recognised the device on insertion in the usb port and it "just worked" flawlessly. Ditto wifi dongles.

Ditto external sound cards; I used Audacity (sound files manipulation prog) which just asked me to select what sound capture/playback device I wanted to use and from then on the card, again, "just worked".

Even tried a 7.1 decoder card and that too was recognised and just worked via the sound management software. You could even test all the speakers using a gui in the prog and it worked flawlessly.

If you can get on with the thousands of free applications/programs then even better, but, big big big but, be advised that despite Linux having progs very similar to MS/Mac stuff like Photoshop just remember that being LIKE Photoshop is entirely different to BEING Photoshop.

At the risk of labouring the point, I could not say that Photoshop files can be exported to Linux progs so you would need to google around whatever forums for detailed info on those sorts of issues.

"Might" be a bit of a show stopper if you took your work home from the studio to find it was not recognised by the Linux equivalent on your home machine...and you had promised your boss the graphics will be ready for the presentation at 8 am sharp the next day...

I use Gentoo on my main computer, very easy to customise but it's also easy to break.  I used to use Debian quite a bit, tried Ubuntu but I'm not sure about it.

Also, Android's based on a Linux kernel (the desktop OS should really be called GNU/Linux) & my last 2 phones have been Androids.

...but you do have the option of using a virtual operating system inside Linux and then install your Windows software into it.

i always can recommend Linux Mint or Manjaro for daily use. It's very easy to setup and switching from Windows isn't that difficult as some people say. At least I would try to dual boot Linux & Windows to get a taste and start to boot only Linux for the next 4 weeks to be able to work with Linux.
