Safe metal for bondage?

I have a ring gag that I want to scale to a smaller size. The O ring is replaceable, but the rings I found say they are "nickel plated". One website says that nickel is food safe, while another says that it's hazardous in industrial environments, especially prolonged exposure.

Is a nickel plated ring safe? What type of metal should I use to replace for a smaller size?

Anything plated is likely a bad idea, as plated things often have a tendency to chip sooner or later. And if you're using it on a gag, small chips of nickel plating getting in the mouth and possibly getting swallowed are gonna be a bad time. To hedge that, I'd say that it would *probably* be okay, but there's still that chance.

I'd think that as a very simple rule of thumb, you'd want to choose a metal (or alloy) that can be used for medical purposes (or in piercings, which I suppose is close enough). Things like surgical-grade steels (though food-grade is likely fine) and titanium would probably be ideal. The trade-off is that those can be a pain to work, depending exactly on what you're looking to do.

My background is much more chemistry than metallurgy so I'm not an expert on this though.

Use metals that are used in surgery such as stainless steel or titanium.
