I have a question. Why is it that Windows Player can't play alot of vids? It shows a prompt about extentions. Or something about codex. I did upload GOM Player, yet that doesn't play everything. Can anyone help me with this?

    Hi Rocky06!

To my knowledge, NO media player can play EVERY type of media file you're going to run across. To cover your bases FAIRLY well though, you might want to make sure you have at least the following players on your system. And the good news is, they're all free:

1.) RealPlayer (or Real Alternative, and/or KMPlayer)
2.) Quicktime Player (or Quicktime Alternative)
3.) VLC Media Player (and/or DIVX player and/or Sothink FLV player)
4.) and, of course, Windows Media Player (along with Media Player Classic)

These are the ones I use the most.

I'm sure others can make additional suggestions or amend my own list, according to their preferences and greater knowledge, but this is a start for you. (Finally, there's a whole nother question about "codecs" -- or "codex" that, if necessary, I'll let others more experienced than myself get into with you.)

Hope some of this helps. Good luck! Smiley

    Hello Rocky06,
if you don't want to apply all codecs yourself (which would be the best choice), I suggest you install the The Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP). It comes with all codecs you need plus mediaplayer classic and zoom player. For quicktime and realmedia you may want to install Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative.

    Here are the links:

    CCCP
    Quicktime Altenative
    Real Alternative

    Cheers

I'd avoid codec packs.  They work most of the time, but when they don't, you will end up reloading your OS to get everything working properly again.

I used to use MPC (and there is a new version MPC Home Cinema or Home Theatre....I forget exactly) and VLC.  However, after my last XP install I have switched to KM Player.  It plays almost everything, and the few that it doesn't, VLC will open.

KM Player, VLC, and the MPC players all install their own codecs so nothing else is needed.

VLC is handy (even if you don't use it by default) because it can often play damaged, corrupt, and partially downloaded files.

And to answer your question, WMP can play most files, you simply need to install the proper codecs for it to do so.

why use WMP when VLC and KMP come with tons of built in features like raw stream file ripping (VLC) and storyboard video capture (KMP)

I would avoid codec packs and download specific codecs on need.  However, if you are not too computer-literate, you should get XP codec pack(provided you have XP, of course) as it installs clean and easy to uninstall.  I find CCCP too bulky with excess, but to each their own.

Codec packs give you the option of choosing which codec you need installed in the pre-installation window like in ACE MEGA codec pack.

You don't blindly select all the codecs

o.k if you want to see allmost all the videos in wmp you nedd this ones (some of bizzare codecs will not work bat most of them will)

ffdshow tryouts (beta6 only, dont use others they are not so good).
    halli matroska splitter.
    real alternative.
    quick alternative.

this will open divx,xvid,flv,mp4,mkv,rm,rmv,mov, and some more bat this is the ones that you see the most.

if you want to open subtitles allso use vobsub.
if you have old computer dont use ffdshow tryouts use ffrdshow from free codecs, the basic one not the mmx or sse version.

or insted of ffdshow you can use xvid codec 1.2.2 and divx 3 bat install the xvid first and after that the divx 3.
you will need allso ac3 filter.

becouse you dont use ffdshow you will need somthing to open mkv and mp4 files so use coreAVC it is good for old computers with slow cpu's.
matroska splitter is in it so dont install if you dont use ffdshow.

you will need alllso AACcore for see mp4 with coreAVC so download it allso.

now here is the list again.

for new pc with fast cpu.
ffdshow tryouts (beta6 only, dont use others they are not so good).
    halli matroska splitter.
    real alternative.
    quick alternative.

for old pc with slow cpu.
    xvid 1.2.2
    divx3
    ac3filter
    coreAVC
    AACcore
    real alternative
    quick alternative

that's it if you find somthing wrong just say.
