The rise of the Iberian teams from the hole they dug for themselves today is quite impressive , maybe one is better than the other i.e Portugal impressive win against Korea outshines by far the Spanish win against Honduras. The bottom of the day is that both teams to rectify the seemingly poor performance and inability to secure proper 3 points in their first game against Ivory Coast and Switzerland Respectively. But things are changing to a great extent for the Portuguese who almost logically have booked a place in the second round. The same cannot be said unfortunately for the great team of Spain who missed numerous chances to improve their bid for the next round against a very tamed and surrendered Honduran team. On the other hand, The Chileans , have continued the trend for steady and good performance of all South American teams in this tournament and it certainly would a shame to see them going out after accumulating an entire 6 points .

Those history fans among my friends here would know what is a Renconquista is to the Iberians , it's the time when they managed to reconquer all their lands back from the Arabs and Moors to establish their own independent kingdom and onward Portuguese and Spanish forged their own empires especially after their discovery of the New world in Central and South America. Apparently football-wise that is what the Spanish and Portuguese have done today with more emphasis on the Portugal team who washed away the old boring style that distinguished them lately and found a new formula that has been quite attractive and also efficient. The Spanish managed to score their first goals and 3 points of the tournament but not enough to get them of the hook since they will be clinging on a thread during their next game and hoping Honduras would go defensive against the Already defensive Swiss team while they would have to take on the flamboyant Chileans by a good score to secure a place in with the Chileans/Swiss in the second round. Easy? Not by far . Possible? Of course it is ,if they recapture back their old spirit that won the European Championship a couple of years ago and Del Bosque have to do more than just order his team to keep pressing on the other teams since that won't be enough to trap a skillful team like Chile who are the best team of the tournament.

The Surprise of the day was the complete fallout of the tough North Korean defense that stood still for almost an entire hour against the might of the Brazilian attacking force. That raises questions about the capability of their coach who stood doing nothing for the entire second half and his team were getting slaughter . Anyway on to the game folks:

    Portugal - North Korea 7-0

Yes you have read that right and if you haven't been around yesterday , yes actually 7 goals were scored in one game in such a goal fest that needs to be seen over and over. The best things is that all the goals look quite impressive and no penalties as well. The game started with a an exchange attacks between the Portuguese and the Koreans and everything seemed to be even for a short while but the focus of the Portuguese who seemed adamant to clean up their first game act was obvious. It didn't take longer than 29 minutes till the great Tiago passed a slick ball ball Meirless who brilliantly scored the first for Portugal in the tournament. Nothing dramatic happened through the next 15 minutes till half time except for a few serious attempts from the Portuguese while it was evident that the Koreans were starting to loosen the tight defensive walls they have been building in the first game and the start of the second one. Much to the surprise of the whole world the stiff and tough North Koreans were apparently replaced by some clones in the second half of the game. I have to admit I have not seen a team crumble so fast in a single game like Koreans did in some time. 6 whole goals and they were skillfully created and executed by the brilliant Portuguese teams.
The second goal was a great pass from the hero of the day Meireles to Simao at 53rd minute who skillfully placed in the net of the Koreans. Just 3 minutes later and from a counter attack at the 56th minute Fabio Coentrao manages to cross the ball for Almeyda who brilliantly scores with a header to have the third in the complete absence of coverage from the Koreans who trying to push forward in unorganized way that lead to their defenses being so easily penetrated. That was not the end as most people would have thought by then as four minutes later at 60th minute. Ronaldo crosses a good one for Tiago who found no problems in heading into the Korean net. Who would have thought???!!!! Well it didn't end there and after some minutes of self control from the Koreans who battled to regain any goal to save their faces and at the 81st minute another Horrible mistake by Chon Ri the Korean defender leads to the brilliant substitute Liedson to score the fifth goal . The entire Korean team looked like school kids for a while and the ship continued to sink as Ronaldo from a brilliant dribble and head control over the ball kicks the 6th goal and his first National goal in 15 months for the Portuguese. The nightmare didn't end for the pathetic Koreans as the Portuguese scoring machine finalized the goal carnival by the 7th goal at the 89th minute from Tiago who scored twice today and is one the great heroes of the day and ending of the top 5 biggest scoring games even in the WC. The substitutions , the tactics and the players were all in top form today though this is still not an indication to how the Portuguese will do next as they are famous for slipping at the wrong timing and the Euro 2004 final with Greece is a good example of that. But Kudos to the team and the great show they have done as this will be one of the most memorable games of the tournament that is full of average games.
Portugal have risen back but I am still quite conservative if they can continue these type of performances in the upcoming games.
They have to face the ever strong Brazil who will not take any game for granted from now one and despite the absence of Kaka and probably Elano from the ranks of the Brazilians they will not let themselves to be humiliated by any chance. Ivory Coast needs a biblical miracle pass to the second round even if they beat North Korea which is not far fetched judging by Korean performance but they need Brazil to Beat Portugal heavily and they need to score something like 9-10 goals in Korea. Quite a hard task if you ask me.

    Chile - Switzerland 1-0

Two very motivated teams clashed earlier today for their ticket for the second round. The better one won it for certain and that is the hot Chilean who have been steady through their 2 games so far with technical ability as well as the brilliant skills and possession football that really makes them a good overall team in the tournament. They will present a very tough opponent for Spain in their upcoming match should they keep what they are doing now. The Swiss on the other hand, have battled well but due to the fact that they are mainly a defensive team more than an attacking one , has lead that they were not able to recover from the goal the send off of the careless Baherani who paid the price for his careless but I still believe that his send off was a bit harsh despite he used his hands twice but a yellow card would have been enough especially when we know that that Arturo Vidal was overacting it to get rid of him. The Saudi modest referee swallowed the bait as he was Card happy all the game and it lead to that Switzerland had to play for an entire hour as 10 players. That was not an easy task to do playing against an organized attacking team like Chile . After a lot of possession football in the first half , the trend continued in the second half all the way to the goal by Mark Gonzalez who utilized a seriously suspected offside cross by Esteban Paredes who seemed to slightly off side to the last Swiss defender. and lobbed it to Gonzalez who buried it in the net with his head. Thus securing the 3 points needed by Chile . However, even if the goal is suspected to be an offside, it's a reward to the tireless effort by the Chileans throughout the game and their countless missed chances especially the very weird ones by the end of the game from Paredes who seems to have the flair but lacks the concentration of a proper attacker. Humberto Suazo who is back from an injury was not asset to the team which is a shame as a man of his capabilities would have added a lot of spice to the already good football tactic of the Chileans. Yet despite 2 winnings Chile is not 100% yet in the second round as a big loss against Spain and a good win for Switzerland could turn the table upside down for them . So they have to either lose by a very small margin or better draw/win to secure their place, as the Swiss is not likely to let the Hondurans eliminate the chances of their second round ticket.

    Spain - Honduras 2-0

The Bruised Spaniards are back again on their feet with a great display of possession football and the Hondurans were unable to stop the deluge of attacks by the Spanish team who lead countless attacks on the seemingly surrendering Honduran team aside from some ventures by Palacio and some of his team mates , the Hondurans were a docile opponent today to the Spanish . However, that has not lead to the score that could keep the Spanish feeling at ease since 2 goals are not enough for them knowing that their rivals have more goals in their pockets in the case of Chile and their other rivals could score higher than that in the Honduran team in the case of Switzerland. So the score of today maybe a bit disappointing but their performance was quite good and the Spanish regained their lost confidence from their defeat of the first game.
It didn't take more than 17 minutes for Spain to score after a great individual effort of David Villa who dribbled past the Honduran defense and scored his team first goal in the tournament. The continued pressure of the Spanish team didn't result in any further goals in this half. Not till the 51st minute when again due to the great pressure of the Spanish team , David Villa once again shines and send a great shot at the Honduran team to score the team and his 2nd goal of the tournament. It was look ever brighter now for the Spanish and they had enough to time to at least double their lead. One of the chances was unmissable due to a penalty awarded and wasted ridiculously by the team hero David villa as the shot goes wide of the post at the . the Remaing half hour would have been sufficient but it wasn't for the Spanish who kept missing easy chances and now the Honduran started to battle since they didn't want a great disaster like the Koreans . They wasted a couple of free kicks and shots that went wide of the Spanish team. The Spanish on the other hand , missed a good chance to double the score and even the Substitutions were not rewarding for them. So now they are left to decide their own fate again the group top team Chile on their upcoming clash which is promising to be one of the most interesting in the 3rd round of the group phase. The Hondurans now officially out of the Tournament and all they hope for is an honourable exit without a big defeats. They are a moderate team at best and lack a lot of elements in their football game but they were also defeated by strong and reputable names of the game.

So look forward to see you tomorrow, yet I would like to let you know that I truly appreciate the feedback and kind words from all my friends here like Puiforcat, Sigursaell, Yakup , Big balls , Pulsar and my good friend Shodan. Without whom I won't have had the urge to continue this.

N.B: Since today's games will be 2 games simultaneously , I have no choice but to watch one game and report the other after watching the highlights and if possible the entire if I get the chance so excuse me for this but it's only possible to watch one at a time.

Have fun guys and a great day to all my friends.  Grin

The cheating Diving actors did indeed score seven against as you say a falling NK side , maybe they only had one big performance in them and that was against Brazil
Still they will go out soon enough so no worries there

As for Spain they are a big team player and If they get through they will I think make the final and they have the Goal of the Cup so far for me
They are favorites and European Champs so lets hope they make it

Chile look great and will be a handful for any who play them

Today should be very interesting France SA the one to watch

    Cheers Ears

    Chile 1 - 0 Switzerland

The referee in this game had completely lost the plot by the time he sent off Behrami.  It's not a surprise he sent Behrami off either; Vidal was another player who went down like he'd been shot.  I'm afraid it's reaching the point where FIFA have to do SOMETHING about the diving; it's seems to have been worse in this tournament than before. They also have to do something about the standard of refereeing; as I said in the shoutbox yesterday the referee in this game didn't look competent to referee a world cup game.  NINE yellow cards (six for Chile, three for the Swiss) and Behrami's red card tells the story I think.

Anyway, enough of my ranting about diving & poor officiating.  Having seen the Chliean goal again, there were two players very close to being offside but I think they were both being played onside (just).  Switzerland were simply too negative and ultimately paid the price for it.  Mind you, the Swiss had a late chance to equalise that they should have done better with.  If they had equalised, it would have been unfair on the Chileans who were much more attacking.

    Spain 2 - 0 Honduras

One thing that struck me about the Spanish last night was how they kept trying to pass the ball into the back of the net.  Honduras didn't help themselves by sloppy passing and seeming to give the ball to the Spanish at almost every opportunity, but even so the Spanish could have emulated the Portuguese and scored a hatful.  The Spanish certainly could do with a decent goal difference with the way the group table is looking.  I think the Swiss will beat Honduras, with Spain having to face a Chile side full of confidence.  It's going to be tricky for the Spanish to qualify, I feel.

    Portugal 7 - 0 North Korea

Missed this one completely.  I'll agree with you that Portugal are going to go through, but I'm not sure they're good enough to progress too much further.

Looking forward to some good games today: Mexico v Uruguay & Greece v Argentina.  What's shaping up to be the worst looking fixture of the tournament so far is also played today - France v South Africa.  If the French play like they have been so far, I can see a win for the South Africans.  Still we'll see later on today.

    As always,  kg_thanksrespect

    Portugal - North Korea
The NKs played fine and almost equally till the first goal. They seemed a bit nervous for rest of the first half, what could have lead to the 2:0 from Almeida in 44th. If that one was in, it was a good competitor for the goal of the day, at least. In the beginning of the 2nd half they got devastated by the brill performance of Meireless, Almeida, Simao and some others. Ronaldo didn't appear till 70th ...
To his goal: Good dribbling, yes, but head control, are you serious? After the attack of NK's goalie and a defender, the ball jumped up out of any control and landed on Ronaldo's back/neck. Who had no idea where the ball was till the landing. Pure luck that the ball landed finally in front of Ronaldo and then he scored into an empty goal. Looked great, but I'd bet anything I got, that this wasn't planed.
Followed by a nice reaction of Ronaldo: I expected that whe would run around screaming and cheering after the selfproclaimed god of soccer scored his goal for Portugal. But no, he kept standing there calmly and smiled surprised. Nice and unexpected reaction from him.
Respect to the only Korean striker, who was completely left alone in the second half. He created some chances on his own and kept fighting/trying to the end.

Well, an easy 0:8+ gainst Ghana will bring back the highest tournament victory to Germany Wink

    Chile - Switzerland

Don't agree with you, that the better team won. The Chileans had more ball posession and have better players, yes, but I really missed some coolnes and control in their game. They can't finalize a good attack with a goal. Imho, their goal was offside, but that was only one part of the ridicoulus perfomance of the ref. Behrami's sent off was a complete joke. A harsh warning would have been enough, so early in the game. Or a yellow card is reasonable aswell, when he wants to calm all players down.
Espacially when you think of the scene where a Chilean chocked Grieching, I think, before a free kick. A clear red one, but not for the ref.
The ref followed such a pendantic line that there came no real flow in the game, he really ruined it.

When Derdyiok didn't fail scoring a sure shot in the end of the game, it would have been a earned 1 point result for each team.

Guess the Swiss will face a hard time, cause Behrami is the "switch" from defense to attacking in Hitzfeld's game.

Can't add anything to the last game: Perfectly summarized
Edit: Just one thing on the game: "You're not welcome, I'm Welcome."  lmao What a great name

Lookin forward if, and when, how the French do today. Expect SA to win, when the play

@Shodan: What a pitty, that you missed Portugal - NK, was a pleasure to watch, imho.
And agree with you, that the FIFA has to do something about the card rain. Would be a first attempt to forget about them after the group stage, not to wait until the semi finals. But what do I know about soccer ...

I agree  The officiating has been pretty poor so far.  FIFA won't do a thing, though, as they've proven over the years.  Just look at their gutless reaction with regards to France & Henry's cheating.  Something needs to be done, and fast!

Hello my friends and thank you for you great feedback as always and we welcome the comments from our new friend Meiri. You are always welcome friend. Thanks for the veterans Puiforcat, Shodan and Big Balls for their insightful reviews and feedback.

My friend Puiforcat: I always found your comments about Portugal hilarious. I agree with you and as I mentioned that scoring 7 in North Korea doesn't mean that they will go far in the tournament but it's certainly a moral boost to them and a sort of an early and serious warning to their upcoming rivals. I know now for a fact that they will pass to the next round since Ivorians have a great uphill to climb and I don't believe that North Koreans will let another 10 goal or something in their net again.

My Friend Shodan: I thank for agreeing with me that Chile was the better side in this game and the score is justified. If half of the chances and near misses that Chile managed were scored, it would have been humiliating to Switzerland. I accept the fact that playing with 10 for 60 minutes is very tough but still the Swiss guys were still in a Euphoria of their earlier success against Spain and they didn't perform the same way they did against Spain since they never managed to neither defend or attack successfully . The near miss at the end of the game would have been an equalizer but that won't have been fair to the more organized and capable Chilean side. Frei mandatory substitution was also a negative factor in their attacking capability. It was simply not their day. But the Referee again played a negative role in this game to a great extent since he used so many cards early in the game that lead the players to be nervous. One would think that he was actually  officiating a Rugby game or something when most fouls were not that serious. Apparently the Referee was very shaky and lost control similarly to the Referee in the Germany game who actually spoiled it all. I am sorry you did miss the Portugal game man as in a tournament like , a game like that is a gem since most games have very tight defensive tactics but it was like a street football one in the second half.

    For my friend Big Balls:
Maybe head dribbling is not the exact way to describe it , but he certainly was able to control in a certain way and it positioned finely on his foot to be kicked in the net. If you wanna see a great head dribble . check the video on you tube I am send here in one of the latest games in the Egyptian Derby between Ahly (Red) and Zamalek (white) that ended 3/3. The dribble was done in the second goal by Mohamed Barakat who managed to dribble the Zamalek defender and hit the ball only to be followed by Emad Moeateb after the goal tried to punch it away. Barakat also scored a late 3 rd goal in this game and thus Ahly was proclaimed the Egyptian League winner for the 35 time in their career. By the Way Barakat who was one was voted by BBC as African Player of the year is the caliber of player that this world Cup is missing and only found in some rare guys like Messi, Robinho , Fabiano and Forlan and to some extent Barrios of Paraguay.
Check the video my friends. It's the 4th goal and the 6th Goal that you need to watch in this great Game.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH_IDxE0HUo

I am looking forward to see France too but I might watch the Uruguay - Mexico one though unless something strange happen I believe it will be a tie not necessarily goalless but a tie nevertheless. I could be wrong who knows:)

Finally, I believe the Karma I spoke about earlier in the Diaries is hitting France badly as dissent in their ranks coupled by Scandals and mis management. I believe a very strong Celtic curse have been casted on them by the Irish before they went to South Africa. LOL.
Have a great day guys and enjoy the games.

Couldn't agree more Shodan. Something needs to be done and believe I just thought of a simple and costless solution. The fourth referee who is standing outside the Pitch is almost useless and only writes down a report after the game that no one bothers to read unless something serious does happen. He can be in contact all the time with Referee on the field as he has the monitor and can really tell the Referee anything that happened so it's not that complicated but Mr. Freakin Blatter doesn't want that and says the mistakes of referees are a joy. I wish he was enjoying his national team player being sent off yesterday. )Smiley What a moron. The only time that system was applied was in a game last year between Brazil and Egypt and it was 3/3 when a penalty was given for Brazil after the 4th referee told the English that he saw the Egyptian defender deviating the ball from the net and that was true. It was against the law but the penalty was true but it was against the law. Then afterward, they said they will never do that in games again after denying Egypt the chance to go for the next round after a great display against Brazil. That was in the last World Confedration cup 2009 in South Africa. I know for a fact that if the roles were reversed and it was Egypt's right for the penalty it would never have been awarded but since it's Brazil and they looked humiliated after Egypt scored 3 goals in them for the first time in Brazil since world cup final 1998. But that is the Fifa Justice.

There is no joy in injustice and there is no joy in mistakes. Otherwise other sports like basketball are completely joyless. which ain't true. These kind of mistakes creates grudges, violence and possible wars like in the case of Salvador and Honduras back in the 1969 when thousands got killed because of a stupid game. That doesn't work and the world is edgy enough in the past decade between wars of terror and civil wars . The world find in football it's own catharsis and we can't toy with the nations feeling like that.

The cheating Diving actors did indeed score seven against as you say a falling NK side , maybe they only had one big performance in them and that was against Brazil
Still they will go out soon enough so no worries there

I agree with you Pulsar and even the Honduran guy was trying to sweeten things a bit when David Via was acting like a true asshole. I really disliked him in that game so he scored twice but morals are above all.
